The history of Overknee Boots – AROLLO Boots Lexikon

The history of Overknee Boots began in the 15th century. Back then Overknee Boots has been worn only by men. Overknee boots were mainly worn as a protection for the legs when riding. Furthermore, overknees were often seen by pirates on the high seas. They were able to hide some of their prey well in the bootlegs. In the 19th century King Karl 13th from Sweden has worn Overknee Boots which reached above the knee to his Uniform. We do not know exactly if those Overknees did had High Heels already, but rather not.

Slowly the Overknee Boots disappeared from the fashion world around the 20th century. It was not time for women to take over this special type of shoewear. It was even forbidden for women to wear Overknee Boots in public. Only at home hidden behind closed doors Overknee Boots came to theirs action.

It lasted until the 1960s when Overknee Boots celebrated theirs comeback at the fashion revolution. Emma Peel from the television series “With umbrella charm and melon”  has worn Overknee Boots to hide a revolver in the shaft of the boots. It tooks almost another 30 years until Julia Roberts made Overknee Boots to a trend again by wearing them in the movie Pretty Woman.

From then to 2009 Overknee Boots still had a, let me say, a bad reputation. Most people combined Overknees with the Red Light Business. After 2009 things changed dramatically. Overknee and Thigh High Boots found theirs way to all Catwalks all over the world. All different styles made of many different materials has been seen since then. Almost any famous Designer does have their own Overknee Boots collection.
